The Miss Belly Dance SA Competition, the brain child of Angela Anzelotti owner of Belly Dance Goddess Dance Studio, was sucessfully launched in 2009. This competition being the first of its kind in SA is due to take place for the second time running in October of this year.
What is Miss Belly Dance SA and why is it important?
NO its is not a beauty pageant, on the contrary this is a rather challenging dance competition with the aim of finding South Africa’s most talented belly dance ‘superstar’. This competition should be seen in the light of its real intent. The objective of such a competition is purely to challenge the South African belly dance industry to greater heights, to set an internationally recognised standard and ultimately to spread the awareness amongst the the western society we live in and to educate them about this acient dance artform.
This year’s dance competition will be judged by top SA performers to the likes of Bhana van der Walt [Dancers of the Sheikh], Angela herself, Senta Duffield [Maya Dance Company], Marissa Cuenoud [SOMA] and international Superstar Bozenka. The judges will look at technique, musical and artistic interpretation and expression, overall appearance, professionalism and the use of props. The competition is divided in categories, so if you are not a solo performer and are more confident to perform in a group you can also enter as a group. Apart from the above mentioned aspects the group performances will also be judged according to timing and group energy.
I was privileged enough to see Carla Shepperson [Miss Belly Dance SA 2009] perform in the beginning of this year. If this was the standard set from last year’s competition I can’t wait to see what this year’s competition will bring.!
